In December 2024, President-elect Donald Trump proposed that the United States acquire Greenland, citing national security interests. Greenland’s Prime Minister, Múte Egede, swiftly rejected this notion, stating, “Greenland is ours. We are not for sale and will never be for sale.”
This was not the first time such a proposal was met with resistance. In 2019, President Trump expressed interest in purchasing Greenland, prompting Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen to describe the idea as “absurd.” Subsequently, President Trump canceled a planned state visit to Denmark.
Greenland, an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, has consistently emphasized its sovereignty and self-determination. Prime Minister Egede reiterated this stance, highlighting the importance of Greenland’s long-standing struggle for freedom and its commitment to openness in international cooperation and trade.
The island’s strategic location and resources have long attracted international interest. However, Greenland’s leadership remains firm in its position that the territory is not for sale, underscoring the principles of self-governance and autonomy.
