I Found Out I Was ‘Engaged’ Through My Boyfriend’s Mom’s Post—So I Played Along
When I woke up that morning, I didn’t expect my life to take such a bizarre turn. Scrolling through my phone, I suddenly stopped in shock. My boyfriend’s mom, Karen, had just posted a long, emotional Facebook status announcing our engagement. The problem? I wasn’t actually engaged.
Her post was filled with excitement: “I’m overjoyed to share the wonderful news—my son is finally engaged to the love of his life! I’ve always known she was the one for him. We can’t wait to start planning the wedding!” She even attached a blurry photo of my boyfriend, Jake, and me at a recent family dinner, as if it were some official engagement picture.
I blinked at the screen, trying to process what I was seeing. Was this a mistake? Did Jake propose, and I somehow missed it? I immediately called him.
“Hey, babe,” he answered casually.
“Jake, WHY is your mom announcing our engagement on Facebook?” I asked, my voice a mix of confusion and panic.
There was silence. Then, he let out a long sigh.
“Oh… yeah. About that.”
The ‘Engagement’ That Wasn’t
Jake explained that his mom had been obsessed with the idea of us getting engaged. Apparently, she had been hinting at it for months—sending him pictures of rings, talking about wedding venues, and even mentioning grandkids. She took it upon herself to make the announcement, assuming it was only a matter of time before it happened for real.
“But why didn’t you tell her the truth?!” I demanded.
“She was so happy,” Jake said sheepishly. “I didn’t want to ruin the moment.”
I sighed. This was classic Karen—she had a tendency to jump the gun, always assuming things before they actually happened. And now, thanks to her, my phone was blowing up with texts from friends and family congratulating me on an engagement that didn’t exist.
So, I Played Along…
At that point, I had two choices: spend the entire day correcting everyone or have a little fun with it. I decided on the latter.
I commented on her post with a simple, “Thank you! We’re so excited!”—just to see where this would go. Almost immediately, the floodgates opened. People started asking for details—How did he propose? What does the ring look like? When’s the wedding?
I texted Jake. “If we’re ‘engaged,’ we need a proposal story.”
We made up an elaborate one about how he surprised me with a candlelit dinner on the beach. I even ‘found’ a stock photo of a ring and posted it. The internet ate it up.
The Truth Comes Out
Eventually, we had to break the news. After two days of playing along, Jake sat his mom down and gently told her the truth. To my surprise, she laughed.
“Well,” she said, “guess we should start looking at rings for real then, huh?”
And just like that—Jake and I realized maybe we weren’t so opposed to the idea after all.
