Florida teen saves herself from alligator that dragged her underwater: ‘I just started punching’

A Florida teenager is being hailed for her bravery after surviving a terrifying encounter with an alligator that dragged her underwater while she was swimming in a river. The incident occurred as the 13-year-old was enjoying a summer outing with friends at a popular swimming spot in North Florida. What began as a carefree day turned into a life-or-death struggle when the alligator suddenly lunged at her from below the surface.

According to the teen, she was swimming near a dock when she felt something clamp down hard on her leg and pull her under. At first, she thought a friend was playing a prank. But the searing pain and the force of the pull quickly made it clear: this was a real threat. The creature dragged her beneath the water, locking its jaws around her thigh.

“I just started punching,” the girl said in interviews after the attack. “I didn’t even think. I hit it over and over, especially on the snout.” Experts say that targeting an alligator’s sensitive areas—like the snout or eyes—can sometimes prompt it to release its grip. That’s exactly what happened. Her relentless punches finally forced the alligator to let go, giving her just enough time to swim to safety.

Bleeding and in shock, the teen managed to pull herself onto the dock with help from others nearby. Emergency responders arrived shortly after and rushed her to the hospital. She underwent surgery for injuries to her thigh and leg but is expected to make a full recovery. Her doctors praised her quick thinking and resilience, noting that her actions likely saved her life.

Wildlife officials later confirmed that the alligator involved was more than 8 feet long and had been captured and euthanized to prevent further incidents. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission reminded the public that while attacks are rare, alligators are common in many of the state’s lakes, rivers, and wetlands. They urged people to swim only in designated areas during daylight hours and to remain alert.

The teen’s mother said the experience was every parent’s nightmare, but she’s incredibly proud of her daughter’s strength and courage. “She didn’t freeze—she fought,” the mother said. “That’s what saved her.”

Neighbors and local community members have praised the teen for her bravery. Some called her a hero for managing to survive such a traumatic event at such a young age. “Most adults wouldn’t have had the presence of mind to do what she did,” one local resident said. “She’s one tough kid.”

This is not the first time a person has survived an alligator attack by fighting back. Wildlife experts advise that while prevention is best, those who find themselves in a rare alligator attack should do what this teen did—fight fiercely, aim for the head, and don’t give up.

The teen says she is still shaken but is trying to stay positive. “I’m sore and scared to go in the water again, but I’m alive. That’s what matters.”

Her story has since spread widely online, with many sharing words of encouragement and calling her a symbol of courage. Some have even started referring to her as “Gator Girl,” a nickname she accepts with a smile.

For now, she’s recovering at home, surrounded by family, friends, and a growing pile of get-well cards. As she puts it, “I’m just glad I’m here to read them.”
