Just After My Boyfriend Proposed, My Best Friend Called in the Middle of the Night and Whispered, “Don’t Trust Him”
Tears of joy blurred my vision as I admired the diamond ring on my finger. Ethan had just proposed under the twinkling city lights, and I had said yes without hesitation. He was perfect—kind, successful, and deeply in love with me. Or so I thought.
That night, long after the celebrations had ended, my phone rang. It was past midnight, and I frowned when I saw the caller ID. It was Olivia, my best friend since childhood.
“Liv? What’s wrong?” I mumbled sleepily.
There was silence on the other end, then a whisper so urgent it sent shivers down my spine.
“Don’t trust him.”
I sat up, my heart pounding. “What? What are you talking about?”
But Olivia had already hung up.
Confusion and fear wrestled inside me. Olivia had always been supportive, but something about her tone made my stomach churn. I tried calling her back, but she didn’t answer.
The next morning, I met Olivia at our favorite café. She looked exhausted, her eyes red-rimmed.
“You scared me last night,” I said. “What’s going on?”
She hesitated, glancing around as if afraid someone was listening. “Sophia, Ethan isn’t who you think he is.”
I frowned. “Liv, I know you’ve never liked him, but—”
She shook her head. “It’s not about that. He’s lying to you. He’s already engaged. To someone else.”
The words hit me like a slap. “That’s ridiculous,” I said, but my voice wavered.
“I have proof.” Olivia pulled out her phone and showed me a picture of Ethan with another woman—holding hands, looking intimate. The caption read: My fiancé, my forever.
My stomach twisted. “This could be anyone—”
“Her name is Rachel. I found her Instagram. She posted this yesterday, Sophia. While he was proposing to you.”
A lump formed in my throat. No. This couldn’t be real. But deep down, something clicked. The late-night work calls, the sudden weekend trips—had I ignored the signs?
I left Olivia without another word and drove straight to Ethan’s apartment. He opened the door with a smile, but it faltered when he saw my expression.
“Is there something you need to tell me?” I asked, holding up my phone with the picture.
His face paled. “Sophia, I can explain—”
I didn’t need to hear it. I turned and walked away.
As I sat in my car, tears streaming down my face, my phone buzzed. It was Olivia.
“Thank you,” I whispered before she could speak.
She exhaled, her voice soft. “Always.”
I had lost a fiancé, but I had gained something more valuable—truth. And the unwavering love of a friend who had saved me from a lifetime of betrayal.
