My Boyfriend of 2 Years Didn’t Want to Get Married Until He Learned I Was Inheriting a Three-Bedroom Apartment — So I Played Along
For two years, I had been deeply in love with Jake. We talked about everything—our dreams, our goals, our future. But every time I brought up marriage, he would shut it down. “I just don’t believe in marriage,” he’d say with a shrug. “It’s just a piece of paper.”
I tried to accept it. After all, we were happy together, right? But deep down, it hurt. I wanted a family, a future, a commitment. And he just… didn’t.
Then, everything changed.
One day, my aunt called me with unexpected news—she was leaving me her three-bedroom apartment in the heart of the city. It was fully paid off, in a prime location, and worth a fortune. I was shocked and grateful. When I told Jake about it, his reaction was instant.
“Wow,” he said, eyes widening. “That’s amazing! So, uh… what are you planning to do with it?”
“I don’t know yet,” I said casually. “Maybe move in, rent it out… I haven’t decided.”
His whole attitude toward me shifted overnight. Suddenly, he was more affectionate than ever. He started talking about the future—our future.
“You know, maybe marriage isn’t such a bad idea after all,” he mused one evening, draping an arm around me. “I mean, we’ve been together for two years. We love each other. Why not make it official?”
I nearly laughed out loud. Oh, now you want to get married?
But instead of calling him out, I decided to play along.
I gushed about wedding plans, picked out rings, and even set a date. The more I talked about our future together, the more eager he became. He started making little comments about how we could turn the apartment into our dream home. “Maybe we can turn the second bedroom into an office,” he suggested. “And the third? That could be a gym or a nursery one day.”
He was practically planning our life inside that apartment. And I let him.
Then, two weeks before the wedding, I dropped the bombshell.
“Jake,” I said sweetly. “I’ve decided to give the apartment to my cousin. She really needs a place, and I want to help her out.”
The color drained from his face. “What? But… but you inherited it.”
“I know,” I said with a smile. “But it’s just a place, right? Just a piece of property.”
His jaw clenched. “Are you sure about this? I mean, we could really use that space.”
I tilted my head. “We? I thought you didn’t care about material things like marriage or property.”
His true colors showed that night. He became distant, irritated, and within days, he called off the wedding. No explanation—just excuses.
I wasn’t heartbroken. I was relieved.
He didn’t want me. He wanted what I had. And I had just saved myself from marrying a man who only saw me as an opportunity.
